A number of developments from Esri lately, particularly with the release of ArcGIS 10.5 very near. Accompanying this major release are many individual product announcements, updates and tips. This week’s 5things kicks off with an update on Esri’s Open Data solution, along with some handy Python tips, details of an educational Story Map competition, tips about making great maps, and a really cool map of real-time cyber attacks. Enjoy and happy Friday!
OpenData 2.0 – Quickly publish and share open data
An update from Esri regarding the OpenData resource – Since it was introduced half way through the year, the Esri Open Data team has been hard at work improving and enhancing the user experience – and listening to feedback. The final release has now arrived – Open Data 2.0 – and with that comes some significant changes. Notable updates… Open Data 2.0 still gives you the option to use your own custom HTML and CSS for your header (and footer) so you can design an Open Data site with the look and feel of your organisational branding. For those looking for an out-of-the-box experience, you can set an organisational logo from a URL. See help docs
Python is huge for Geo Devs, there’s no doubt about that! There’s plenty of helpful resources around including free downloadable resources, online training, and now there’s plenty of support documentation from Esri. In this recent blog post they share several code snippets in order to help readers become more familiar with the Python window and the arcpy.mapping module – handy!
Cartographic Principles for Making Great Maps
For GIS and mapping professionals, there’s a simple solution that will help to produce a map that people will want to look at, and share! Discussed in this earlier edition of ArcUser, the article Make Maps People Want to Look At takes a closer look at the 5 primary design principles for cartography. Taking the following 5 principles and applying them to your next map will help you greatly to communicate geographically to your audience with a map they will want to look at: Visual contrast,Legibility,Figure-Ground Orientation,Hierarchical , Organization, Balance.
Understanding Story Maps Competition
With a deadline now extended until Feb. 2017, this is a fabulous opportunity for young people looking to tackle important environmental, cultural, or economic issues and leverage the power of geography in doing so. About the competition: We are inviting high school and college age students to share their perspectives and research on topics associated with global understanding by creating story maps that examine and address the ways in which we inhabit our increasingly globalized world. Three winning story maps will be selected and receive some great cash prizes!
Real Time Norse Cyber Attack Map
An amazing data visualization tool that displays Internet attacks occurring all over the World, in real-time. Norse maintains the world’s largest dedicated threat intelligence network. With over eight million sensors that emulate over six thousand applications – from Apple laptops, to ATM machines, to critical infrastructure systems, to closed-circuit TV cameras – the Norse Intelligence Network gathers data on who the attackers are and what they’re after. Sit back and watch the attacks unfold, it really is quite impressive!
