In June 2013, President Obama announced the ConnectED Initiative, designed to enrich K-12 education for every student in America. ConnectED empowers teachers with the best technology and the training to make the most of it, and empowers students through individualized learning and rich, digital content.
ConnectED hotspots around America
In support of ConnectED, Esri offers to any US K12 school (public, private, or home schools) an ArcGIS Online Organization subscription. The map reveals Sites with GIS from Esri and ConnectED — see more about ConnectEd HERE. This story map was created with the Story Map Journal application in ArcGIS Online.
In addition to access to software, Esri ConnectEd provides educators with access to a wealth of learning and support materials and tools. Instructional materials, lesson plans, and other resources that use web mapping technology to support them are provided to teachers and educators. Lessons are available by age group and touch on such important topics as climate change, deforestation, urban growth and much more.
Lessons and materials from ConnectEd
We’re pleased to be actively involved with ConnectEd to help educators be more efficient and have access to software and support with our Admin Tools, an ideal tool set to help them manage their student accounts and ArcGIS users within their institutions and orgs. Keep in mind, the movement to help K12 schools get involved in GIS and have access to cutting edge software isn’t confined to America. Esri is active around the World, offering educators and EDU institutions access to software and supporting lessons and other materials. North of 49, the Education and Research group at Esri Canada provides resources, events and training to support GIS in teaching, learning and research at all levels. Esri UK is very active in this space and we’re pleased that ESRI UK is also an avid user of our Admin Tools for ArcGIS Online in order to clone their organizations/schools and help get them up and running and mapping quickly! Every week we are pleased to greet several new UK high schools, Colleges and Universities and welcome them to the Admin Tools user family and help their program GIS administrators to support their students and young GIS professionals.
GEO Jobe, along with the Esri Education group presented a webinar in October 2016. The focus of the educational session was to introduce users from the GIS Education community to Admin Tools, a powerful suite of apps and tools that help ArcGIS Administrators be more efficient. Our Admin Tools users in EDU are avid users of the tools, in particular, the top uses by the GIS EDU community include: backup and restore, viewing item dependencies, delete users, email users and manage user credits. GIS allows educators to engage their students effectively, and to help them develop the critical thinking and spatial analysis skills needed in today’s globalized workforce. It is also widely used for academic research in colleges and universities. GIS can be used by school boards and campus administrators to manage facilities and monitor student enrolment, and by libraries and museums to make important connections between places, people and events (Esri.ca)
