30 Years of GIS in the Rockies & A look at the Past, Present, and Future of Geo Tech

This past week the annual GIS in the Rockies (GISITR) conference took place in Denver, Colorado. Although we are based in Tennessee (and Mississippi), we are always interested, when possible, in taking part in GIS industry events of interest – the GIS in the Rockies Event is one regional event that is always on our radar. We were fortunate to have our own @gletham in attendance once again absorbing some great material and sharing with us and our connection on social media (see Twitter hashtag #GISITR).

Peter Batty, CTO Ubisense delivers the keynote address at GIS in the Rockies, 2017

With GISITR being located in the GeoTech hotbed of the Colorado Front Range, you can always be sure to find some awesome presentations, networking, and exhibits from savvy GIS professionals and this year was no exception. The conference spans 2 days typically with keynotes, technology sessions, product demos, and even a career academy. Attendees also are treated to some networking socials and for those interested, and tours of local landmarks (optional Friday tour).

A highlight of the day was the opening keynote delivered by popular GIS visionary, Peter Batty (@pmbatty). Peter jokes that he is currently on a 7-year cycle, delivering the opening address every 7 years. So, if that’s the case you can come to Denver in 2024 to catch Peter’s next GISITR keynote! This year, Peter treated us to an interesting recount of his career in GeoTech, taking us back to the 80s when he got his start with IBM, through to the present time where Peter is the founder & CTO of Ubisense (among other things), and then gave us a glimpse into the future where he predicts such trends as reality capture, 3D scanning, AR, Machine Learning, and vast amounts of accessible data will dominate. Where do you see the industry in 2024?

If you didn’t manage to catch Peter’s keynote you can watch it below, thanks to the folks at GISITR who live-streamed the session and archived the recording – awesome!
