For 25 years, GEO Jobe has been paving a path through the geospatial industry, serving clients with innovative GIS and IT solutions. Our company’s commitment in this space has led to the highest level of partnership with the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
What’s the key to our success and longevity? It’s the faces behind our company. GEO Jobe is made up of a growing team of talented, hard-working people who each embody our company philosophy of “acknowledging the person first and the problem second.”
Meet one of those people, Customer Success Manager George Singley, who joined GEO Jobe in 2023.
Q: What is your role at GEO Jobe, and what does it entail?
A: I recently accepted a position as a Customer Success Manager in GEO Jobe’s Sales Department. In this role, I am actively promoting our software and services to ArcGIS Organizations around the world. In particular, I’ve taken a great interest in sharing our products with Federal, State, and local government offices and agencies to help them achieve better control, use, and access of their data.
Q: What has your career path at GEO Jobe looked like and what attracted you to join the team?
A: I originally reached out to join GEO Jobe as part of the Sales Department but was offered to join the Support Division as a Tier Two Support Technician in September of 2023. I served as the primary point of escalation for some of our more difficult use cases, or for customers who needed more hands-on troubleshooting, deeper testing, or technical research. After a full year with the Support Team, and gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge about our products, I was given the opportunity to move to our Sales Division. Now I provide more technical know-how to our clients from our first conversation.
Q: What jobs and experiences have led you to your current position?
A: My primary work experience has been in the automotive industry, working as a sales and leasing consultant, a Business Development Coordinator, an inventory manager, and fleet manager through my time with (primarily) Toyota and Nissan. Through it all, I continued to stay interested in the newest technology both in the vehicles and in the dealerships. I finally decided to start studying IT on my own in March of 2023 and after receiving my first technical certificates, began looking into the IT sector. I applied at GEO Jobe in August that same year, and started two weeks later.

Q: What particular skills or talents are most essential to be effective in your job?
A: Listening and critical thinking! I spent years in the auto industry watching sales reps come and go because they wanted to sell the vehicles they loved to their clients without caring about the client’s needs. One of the first things I do when I talk with a new client – whether in GIS or automotive sales – is to sit down with a pen, a pad of paper, and just listen to their problems, how often they face them, and how they would rather be spending that time in their day. Until I know what my client cares about, I can’t help them in any way that makes sense. You might luck into an answer every so often, but until you stop thinking about what you want to do and listen to what they want to do, no one is going anywhere.
Q: Any advice for recent graduates entering into the job market and aspiring to a similar role?
A: Get your foot in the door before anything else. You might not find the position you want immediately, but you know the kind of people you want to work for and the kind of products you believe in. Be a part of the company and find the niche that fits you – not the other way around. If you believe in your company, it shows in your work, and that’s the kind of thing that gets noticed. You find more opportunities once you’re in the office than you do knocking on the door the first time. Don’t be discouraged if the first job you have doesn’t fulfill you – mine was at a fast food restaurant.

Q: What technologies and strategies do you use in your day-to-day work that are key to success?
A: Ask a hundred sales people how to sell and you’ll get a hundred answers. What works for them, or their industry, isn’t necessarily right or wrong. For me, I try to step away from the frame of mind of a salesman and work purely as a consultant. I like to take a two-step approach with my clients.
Part One, I want to know what’s going wrong, what’s inefficient, what is causing pain, how long it’s been going on, what they’ve tried to bandage or repair the problem, and what has or hasn’t succeeded. Then we get to Part Two – we can talk about what GEO Jobe offers when I know that what we’re offering benefits this new client.
To keep track of those things, I live and breathe inside my Google Drive. I keep notes in Docs. I keep logs and records in Sheets. I’m working on a Form for clients to provide feedback on their product experience. I love the ability for Photos to store memories, events, and reveals from conferences and on site events with clients. And I would be lost with some of our international clients without the help of Translate to bridge those first contacts.
Q: What would you like to learn more about or incorporate into your daily work?
A: I grew up as an avid fan of roleplaying games. It started with the Legend of Zelda on the classic Nintendo Entertainment System – the NES. I had a copy of the game, but either lost or destroyed the booklet as a kid, so I don’t remember ever having the map. I remember sitting down in front of an old wood framed TV with those heavy, clicking dials that you could hear halfway through the house, and I would try to draw the map by hand to figure out where the dungeons were at 5 or 6 years old. I couldn’t remember where to go, but I knew how important a map was!
Now that I work for a company so deeply associated with GIS, I find myself taking 30 minutes here and there to open up ArcGIS and play with a map of my own. Maybe one day I’ll be even a quarter as good as some of our Professional Services team!

Q: On a more personal side, do you have a favorite newspaper, magazine, blog, or sources of inspiration?
A: This is probably going deep into left field for a tech company, but My American Journey by Colin Powell speaks volume of what we can become, and Eisenhower in War and Peace reminds me that no matter what may be happening, there is a way to let the cool heads and calm voices prevail – even in the face of nuclear war. Occasionally, I find myself reading some older books on sales techniques and how to effectively communicate with clients and coworkers so that everyone wins – Joe Verde and Zig Zigler always seem to be in the rotation.
Q: What kind of technology do you prefer and why?
A: I started building PC systems in 6th grade before Y2K scared us all. My father was certain that computers were going to be the wave of the future, so I received my first tower in the 90s. That led me to gaming communities and eventually to IRC, where I first started using CTCP and DCC connections for mods and updates to games. Having started there, I’d say Windows is definitely my preference for day-to-day use. However, there’s a lot to be said for the speed and security of a Linux box. I don’t use Linux machines often, but they definitely have a lot of strengths that give them the edge in certain professional environments.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
A: I know we’re in the South, but I grew up on ice hockey. I’m an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan and I try to go to any Sea Wolves game when I can get the time to be there. Like quite a few of my coworkers, my creative outlet comes from a love of Table Top RPGs. I’ve played decades of D&D, GURPS, and Vampire: the Masquerade, but my personal favorite is Legend of the Five Rings and has been since high school.
