The NFL draft is here and yes, the Browns have done it once again with the #1 pick – let’s just wait and see how this one pans out! But have you ever wondered, where do the best players in the country come from? Indeed a good question and ideally answered with a map! Enter this interesting map from Esri “NFL First Round Draft Picks by Birthplace”
This map shows the birthplaces of players drafted in the first round of the last 10 NFL drafts (2008 – 2017). The color of the circles represents the year drafted (darker is more recent) while the size of the circle represents the pick position. Note, data for this map comes from Pro Football Reference
As the sports world prepares for the 2018 NFL Draft in Arlington, TX, Esri wanted to explore the geographic distribution of players drafted in the first round over the past 10 years. Esri’s interactive Decade of Drafts map reveals the birthplaces of every player (based on data from pro-football-reference.com) selected in the first round of the draft from 2008 to 2017. Players are symbolized by the year they were drafted and readers can use the interactive filters on the left side of the app to slice and dice the data by year drafted, college attended, home state, position played, professional team, and draft age. You can click any point for more information about that player.
Remember, if you want a custom homepage to save favorite maps and webmaps you can use the free Mapfolio, an ideal way to create a custom page for yourself or to share with other Groups of people in your org. Do you have a team or group of sports enthusiasts within your org? You can create and manage a group of fans and manage all their data/app access permissions using Admin Tools for ArcGIS Online – give it a try!
