Here is a short Q & A with Software Development Intern, Brice Jones. Brice joined the GEO Jobe team in March of 2019 and is based out of our Center for Research and Engineering in Gulfport, MS.
Q: What is your job at GEO Jobe, and what does that entail?
A: I am currently an Intern for the Software Development division. My job is to learn what we do at GEO Jobe and how to do it, as well as help out around the office so everyone else can focus on their work.
Q: What attracted you to joining the GEO Jobe team?
A: The people. Everyone here is helpful and friendly, plus we share a lot of interests.
Q: What are you currently working on/learning about?
A: I am currently learning the Dojo Toolkit as well as the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. Next I will be moving on to Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS.
Q: Have you had to learn any new technologies or skills for your job so far?
A: I had never studied programming or done anything like this before. So I had the chance to learn everything from scratch.
Q: What would you like to learn more about?
A: I love learning new things, so I’d like to say everything. More specifically though, I’m interested in learning about machine learning.
Q: Any advice for students considering internships?
A: Communication is important. Talk to your contact or mentor about what you need to learn, then show them the progress you’ve made. Most importantly, show your interest.
Q: On a more personal side, do you have a favorite newspaper, magazine, blog, or sources of inspiration?
A: I am a long time fan Rooster Teeth, and seeing how far they have come. From a few people making Halo videos at home to the company they are today with over 200 full time employees is incredibly inspiring.
Q: What kind of technology do you prefer and why? (Mac or PC, iOS or Android)
A: I prefer using PC over Mac and Android over iOS. It’s mostly habit, but I do like that Android and PC are more open to the user.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
A: My preferred outdoor activities are going to the beach, taking nature pictures, wakeboarding and snowboarding. At home, I enjoy reading, video games, and card games.
